Abstract

In a technology-oriented enterprise, the Value Stream Map (VSM) is a critical tool for visualizing how value is delivered to customers. However, many enterprises are unable to realize that the optimal performance of a value stream is fundamentally linked to the underlying business capabilities defined in the Business Capability Model (BCM). This paper highlights the widespread disconnect between value stream map and business capability map and presents a framework for ensuring traceability between the two. We argue that without this alignment, enterprises lack visibility into their strengths and areas for improvement. Through analysis and examples, we demonstrate that mapping each stage of the value stream to its supporting business capabilities is essential for operational excellence and strategic alignment.
